Balloons are one of my favorite ways to create a backdrop. They are inexpensive and really make a statement. Today, I’m sharing a tutorial to create a balloon hoop (I promise it’s easy)! The balloon portion is also the same tutorial to create an organic balloon garland 🙂
Supplies:
– Hula hoop (mine is 2ft, purchased at Target)
– Yarn
– Scissors
– 5″ balloons
– Ribbon or fishing line

Step 1:
Find the beginning piece of yarn and tie it around your hula hoop, securing it with a knot. *make sure not to cut the yarn

Step 2:
Let’s start wrapping! Continue wrapping the hoop until it is fully covered.

Step 3:
Once your hoop is fully wrapped, tie a knot to secure the yarn and cut off the excess.

Step 4:
Balloon time! Inflate the balloons using a handheld balloon pump. I used 48 mini balloons (5″). I double-layered pearl ruby red inside of a regular white balloon to create the custom “dusty red” color. You can also purchase my mini balloon garland kit (here) if you don’t want to attempt it organically!

Step 5:
Take 2 balloons and tie the ends together. Do this step for all inflated balloons.

Step 6:
Next, take 2 sets of tied balloons and twist together to create a quad. Continue until you have 8 quads total.

Step 7:
Begin with one balloon quad. Take your string or fishing line and tie a knot around it.

Step 8:
Place a balloon quad on top of the other a wrap your string/fishing line around the balloons to secure the quads together. You can gently pull the string to tighten the garland. I used 4 balloon quads on each side of the hoop. Tie a knot once finished (leave extra on the end) and cut the string.

Step 9:
Attach your garlands to the hoop. They actually slide right onto the hoop. I would suggest using the extra string to tie it to the hoop just to make sure it stays intact during the entire duration of your event. Repeat the same step for the other side.

Yay, your balloon hoop is now complete!

Step 10:
I recommend using a command hook to hang the hoop. I also love adding in fresh flowers/greenery.
